“Citazione”
Among the Italian Lords of Renaissance, one in particular stands out for the recognizability of its profile: the Duke Federico da Montefeltro, Lord of Urbino.
He is usually known thanks to the portrait of #PierodellaFrancesca , who set his image in history.
Have you ever notice something strange in his profile?
The aspect that immediately chase our eyes is the particular shape of his nose.
Why does Federico da Montefeltro has a profile like that?
And why Piero Della Francesca painted him without any aesthetic correction?
This is due to a combat training of the Duke, during which a sword pierced his helmet, cutting off a piece of his nose and his right eye. This is also why he is always portrayed in profile. In addition to this anecdote, the historical evidences of an enlightened, humanist and promoter of arts remain.
Who was the Duke of Urbino?
He was born in the Castle of Petroia, a place still steeped in history: we’ve been there! It’s not just about walking on the same ground and sleeping in the same location occupied by distinguished people and Lords from the past; you can also stop and admire the same starry dark sky. In fact, the sky of Petroia has been elected as one of the most beautiful skies in Italy.
